He was drafted at 22 years of age and served in the US Army during WWII. He fought with the 45th Infantry regiment and fought from Sicily up the coast of Italy where he was injured in Anzio. He then served in Rome and Germany where he witnessed the horrors of the holocaust at the liberated Dachau concentration camp. Jim received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and Bronze Star. He retired from Metropolitan Life where he worked as Sales Manager for 25 years. He was a Mason and Shriner and loved visiting First Baptist Church in downtown Evansville where he was a teacher and Deacon.
He enjoyed golfing and walked two miles every day. Jim was a diehard UK basketball fan.
Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Alice Haesele; brother, Harold Holt;
first wife, Mary (Berry) Holt; second wife, Vivian (Batteiger) Holt; and cousin, Sue Ellen Pickens .
He is survived by his sister, Anne (Mickey) Walker of Owensboro, KY; nieces, Judy (Randy) Barber of Princeton, IN and Karen (Bob) Snow of Sun Lakes, AZ; nephews, Marty (Sarah) and Michael (Tammy) Walker both of Owensboro, KY and Doug (Jen) Haesele of Minier, IL; step-sons, Adrian, Ed and Bryon Batteiger; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services with military rites will be held 2:00 PM Friday, July 10, 2015, at Rosehill-Elmwood Cemetery Chapel in Owensboro, KY, with burial to follow. Friends may visit Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Alexander West Chapel, 2201 W. Illinois St., Evansville, IN 47712.
