James Michael “Mike” Hoffman, 79, of Evansville, IN passed away on August 23, 2023 in Carmel, IN. Mike was born in Evansville, IN on August 7th, 1944 to James and Jewell Hoffman. He attended Evansville Central High School where he excelled on the golf team. He went on to the University of Evansville to continue his academic and athletic careers where he majored in Accounting and played on the golf team. Mike spent his entire professional career at Mead Johnson, working in Accounting and Finance, retiring in 1999. During his early years at Mead Johnson, he was called to serve his country. Mike proudly served in the Navy, completing one tour of duty in Vietnam. Mike was very active in the Evansville community. He served as Treasurer for the Evansville City Golf Tournament for over 30 years. He also served on the Evansville City Tournament Dan Scism Scholarship Committee, rewarding thousands of dollars to financially needy high school graduates, for over 30 years. In addition to volunteering for the Evansville City Golf Tournament, Mike had a successful amateur golf career, finishing numerous times in the top 10 of the tournament. Mike also worked with his alma mater, serving as a volunteer assistant golf coach for the University of Evansville Men’s and Women’s golf teams. In addition to golf, Mike volunteered as a coach on many of his son’s sports teams throughout the years. Mike attended Christian Fellowship Church in Evansville and Cornerstone Lutheran Church in Carmel, IN. Mike’s greatest love was his family. He and his wife Gail were married for 45 years and they shared one son, Bobby. The family made great memories vacationing to Florida and enjoying weekly Friday night dinners with their closest friends. The last few years, Mike and Gail were fortunate enough to split their time between Evansville and Carmel to spend time with their son, daughter in-law, and grandchildren. There was nothing Mike cherished more than being able to spend so much quality time together with them. Mike was preceded in death by his father, James Hoffman, and mother, Jewell Hoffman. He is survived by his wife Gail, son Bobby (Lisa) of Carmel, IN, grandchildren Brooks and Hadley, sister in-law Chris Strouse, brother in-law Scott Strouse, and many cousins. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, August 28, 2023 at Alexander West Chapel, 2100 W. Illinois Street, Evansville, IN, officiated by Pastor Cliff Herring and eulogy by Bob Walther. Burial with military honors will immediately follow at the Lutheran Cemetery, 1305 N. St. Joseph Avenue, Evansville, IN 47720. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Monday, August 28th from 11:30 am until service time. Memorial contributions may be made to Christian Fellowship Church or Evansville East Youth Baseball.
