Donald Richard Hulsey, Sr. passed away on August 20, 2010 at 12:55 pm at Deaconess Hospice Center. He was born on December 28, 1932, the only child to William ‘Bill’ Hulsey and Bertha Grace Hulsey who preceded him in death. He was 77 years old.
Don knew the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior and he peacefully passed from this life into eternity to be with the Lord. He was a member of Oak Hill Bible Fellowship Church where he had served as an Elder, Deacon, and Trustee.
He was a devoted husband, dad, and grandpa (‘pap’). He loved to fish with his ‘fishing buddy’ Bill Lockhart, talk with his ‘telephone buddy’ Lee Thompson, and vacation and play cards with special friends, Jerry and Phyllis Jean Knowles.
Don retired from EVSC in 1995 after 41 years of devoted service. He was an influence on many children’s lives in many positive ways during his career with the school corporation. He was a teacher and counselor at Cynthia Heights Elementary School, Assistant Principal at Mc Gary Middle School, and a counselor at Thompkin’s Middle School. He belonged to many education organizations. He was awarded lifetime membership with Cynthia Heights PTA. He was an officer and president of Phi Delta Kappa, member of the ETA, ISTA, and lifetime member of NEA. He was past president of School Counselor Association.
He retired from the United States Air Force with the rank of Colonel. He served 32 years in the military for his country (1954 – 1986). He received many awards during his years of service. One of the awards Don received was the Legion of Merit Award which is awarded specifically to Colonels in the military for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Phyliss (Koenig), daughter Debbie (Keith) of Columbus, Indiana, son Don Jr. (Genie) of Troy, Illinois, six grandchildren: Katie and Eli Harmon and Josiah, Abigail, Grace, and Isaac Hulsey, three grand ‘puppies’: Chloe and Nutty Harmon and Booie Hulsey. Brother-in –law Dr. Bob Koenig (Ruth), Jerry Koenig (Bobbie), and nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11:00 AM Monday, August 23, 2010, at Alexander North Chapel, officiated by Rev. Donald Hulsey, Jr., with burial at Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Sunday from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM and Monday from 9:30 AM until service time at the funeral home.
A special thanks to those who cared for Don: Dr. Michael Titzer, Dr. Rick Crawford, Deaconess Home Health Care, and the ‘Angels’ at the Deaconess Hospice Center where he spent his final days. Thanks to all who prayed, sent cards, and called during his illness. Thanks to his many friends for their love and concern.
