Betty Jo (Salmon) Barnard passed away at 11:42 a.m. on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at Heart to Heart Hospice at the age of 99. Betty attended Centennial Elementary School and graduated from F.J. Reitz High School in 1940. She was also a graduate of Lockyear Business College. Her first job was with Underwriter’s Adjusting Company. Then after World War II started she worked at Chrysler Corporation in the purchasing department. When her husband John was stationed in San Diego during the war, she worked as a secretary to a Lt. Commander at the Naval Supply Depot there. When her husband went to sea, she returned to Evansville and worked for the Navy at the LST shipyard. After it closed she worked as a secretary for three doctors at Marine Hospital in Evansville. After closure of the hospital, Betty worked as secretary to the president of Permanent Savings Bank for several years. She worked for several charities over the years. She was a member of the Visiting Nurse Association for 18 years, serving as president for one year. She was a member of the Vanderburgh Christian Home Board of Directors until the sale of the home. She then became a member of the Christian Home Foundation, serving as treasurer of that organization. Betty was a long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church, serving on various committees of the church and was president of the United Methodist Women of the church for seven years and as circle leader for several years. She loved to knit, cook, and play bridge. Betty loved her family, friends, and church. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Elery and Marie Salmon, and was their only child. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Barnard. She is survived by her son, Blake Barnard of Dallas; daughter, Julia Ritter (Jerry) of Newburgh; grandchildren, Rory of Dallas, Whitney of Fort Worth, and Kacey of Newburgh; great-grandchildren, Roman and Bowie; and several cousins.
