Reginald “Rex” Lambert Murphey, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2024. Born on July 22, 1947, in New York City, Rex was the cherished son of Rex Sr. and Jean Stratton Murphey.
Rex’s early life was shaped by the close companionship of Annie McWeeney, a devoted caregiver who became his second mother and protector. Despite their 6-year age difference, Rex and his sister, Katharine "Kitty," shared a special sibling connection and a mutual affection that remained constant throughout their lives. Summers at the family’s Westhampton Bay House were filled with laughter, fishing expeditions, and adventures with lifelong friends. Whether casting lines at Rogers Bridge or navigating the waters of Dune Road with his father, Rex found immense joy in fishing and boating—a passion he carried throughout his life. Rex really enjoyed his time on the water, spending quality time with his son Blake in places like Quantuck Bay, Costa Rica, the Florida Keys, and Panama, teaching him to love the sea and fishing.
Rex lived a full and vibrant life in Manhattan, NY, Cohasset, MA, and Scituate, MA. He was an active member of The Union Club in Manhattan, where he enjoyed squash and the fellowship of a close-knit community. He also found camaraderie and purpose through his memberships in The Wyandanch Club in Eastport, NY, and the Scituate Harbor Yacht Club in Scituate, MA.
Rex welcomed his son, Blake Lambert Murphey, during his first marriage to Casey (McKinnell) Murphey. Though their paths later diverged, Rex and Casey remained friends, united in their pride and support for Blake’s growth and accomplishments. Later, Rex married Megan Murphey, and together they created a life full of love and great memories. They hosted countless gatherings at their Cohasset home overlooking Sandy Beach, where Rex manned the grill or smoker, creating moments of laughter and connection for friends and family alike.
Rex’s entrepreneurial spirit defined much of his professional life. He founded Montauk Services, an industrial pipe-cleaning business that became a respected name across the United States and Canada. With determination and resilience, he managed the company through challenges and later transitioned it into American Pipeline Solutions, where his son, Blake, continues the family legacy.
A private ceremony will be held in Westhampton, where Rex’s ashes will rest in the place he loved most.
A public Memorial Reception will be held at Scituate Harbor Yacht Club, 84 Jericho Rd, Scituate, MA 02066, on January 11th from 1-4 PM to celebrate the lives of Rex and Megan Murphey. A casual lunch will be served.
Rex’s legacy lives on through his son Blake; his daughter-in-law, Heather; and his cherished grandchildren, Alexander "Zan" Murphey, and Theodore Murphey. He is also survived by his sister Katharine “Kitty” (Murphey) Pell, his brother-in-law Tony Pell, and the countless friends and family members whose lives he touched with his humor, loyalty, and larger-than-life spirit. He will forever be remembered as a man of great character and kindness.
