Norman G. McHugh, 90, devoted husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer. He was born in San Francisco, California; he was the second child born to Irish immigrants Denis “Pat” Patrick and Sara (Sally Hughes) McHugh.
Norm was enrolled in Holy Redeemer School, graduated from Saint Ignatius College Preparatory School in 1946, and attended the University of San Francisco with a focus on accounting.
Norman married Eugenia “Genie” Hinds on September 10, 1949. Norm and Genie had five children -- Carol (Tony) DiLeva, Stephen, Ann (Rudy) Wadley, Geraldine (fiance Dale Misner)
and Jeff McHugh.
Norm's career in law enforcement started with the 65th San Francisco Police Department Recruit Training Academy in 1950 which was interrupted by his service in the United States Marine Corps from 1950 to 1952. After Norman's honorable discharge from USMC he returned to the San Francisco PD serving until 1957 when he transferred to the California Department of Justice, Law Enforcement Division. During his career in the DOJ he held positions of Supervising Special Agent in Charge of San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sacramento offices and Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement and Bureau of Investigation.
Following his retirement from law enforcement, Norman attended wood shop classes at Palomar College which led to his membership in the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association's program of building wooden toys to be presented to children during the Christmas holiday. Norm joined the San Diego Woodturners Club where he taught pen turning to wounded warriors at Camp Pendleton. He was a familiar face at the San Diego Blood Bank donating 19 gallons of blood, saving 396 lives. Norman also volunteered delivering baked goods to the Encinitas Senior Center.
Lived life by example and beloved by all who knew him, Norman is survived by his wife and his five children, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
