Lawrence Wayne Richards Jr.

Lawrence Wayne Richards, Jr. (“Dick”), born in Los Angeles on June 28, 1934, passed away on July 2, 2023, at his home in Encinitas, California. He was the beloved son of Lawrence W. Richards and Zetta Rippey Richards.

Dick had a remarkable life filled with achievements and passions. He attended the University of Southern California (USC) where he excelled as a track star. His dedication and talent in track continued into his later years when he competed in masters track events. Between the ages of 60 and 81, Dick was a three-time world record holder and a six-time American record holder in multiple events, including the 100 meters and the long jump. Named by USATF twice in his 60s, he was a four-time San Diego Masters Athlete of the Year. In 2015 at the Outdoor Track and Field World Championships in Lyon, France, he won at age 81 the silver medal in the 100 meters and the gold medal in the long jump, an extraordinary lifetime achievement.

Like his father, Dick had a passion for cars. He grew up racing sports cars at Willow Glen and the Riverside racecourses. An entrepreneur and inventor, Dick’s passion for driving led him to a career devoted to locating, buying, and selling luxury automobiles for customers around the country.

Dick will be remembered for his quick wit, warm ways, and commitment to others. At international track meets he always connected warmly with athletes from around the world. He loved to share his knowledge of track and field with younger athletes, helping coach and mentor young athletes in his community, including his grandson Robert Brandt and great nephew John Yrastorza. His guidance and support will be cherished by those he mentored about “going fast”.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Joy of 33 years, his children Wayne, Teressa, Royal, all from previous marriages, and five grandchildren Robert, Emily, Audrey, Evan, and Alana. He is also survived by his sister Diane Miller and her husband Tyler, along with four nieces and nephews, and many grand nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in the fall in San Diego to celebrate Dick’s life, achievements, and the impact he had on others. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the USC Track and Field Scholarship Fund, one of Dick’s favorite causes.
