Cathleen Tincup

It is with a saddened heart that we are announcing the loss of our dear sweet Mom. She passed peacefully a little before 7 pm on Tuesday December 17 with family by her side. Cathleen (Kay) was born in San Diego at home in the community of Talmadge to Florence and George Giles. She came from a large loving family of 8 having 3 sisters (Florence, Jean, Peggy) and 2 brothers (Bud and Georgie). Cathleen attended St. Joseph’s grammar school, Memorial Jr. High and San Diego High where she made many lasting friendships and enjoyed belonging to various social clubs and sororities. She worked at Rohr and North Island in the years out of high school where she met the love of her life James (Bill) Tincup (originally from Oklahoma) while taking the “Nickel Snatcher” ferry back and forth to work. Bill and Cathleen married in 1947 and began raising a family. The family grew to include one son and three daughters.

Cathleen was very involved in her children’s lives including Scouts, PTA, volunteering at school for the library and accounting and a little coaching. At the same time, she was the number one supporter of her husband’s softball activities. As the children got older, she went back to work and found her calling with San Diego City Schools where she eventually earned the top administrative assistant position under the principal at Kit Carson Elementary. She worked for the schools a total of 22 years but promised she would retire when her husband finished up after working 42 years for the federal government.

She was a watercolor artist and very talented in the area of home arts including sewing, cake decorating, cooking (she self-published a cookbook) and textile painting. She was also self-taught on the computer and loved creating her own greeting cards. She cherished her dogs, loved reading, traveling, the theater, luncheons with her social groups but mostly had endless love for her family.

Mom valiantly endured the last two years of immobility assisted by hospice and family but handled it in her cheerful sweet way as was her MO throughout her life. Speaking of which, her family meant everything in the world to her and became her focus always before herself. She was generous with her time and resources to the max. No one who met her didn't comment on just how sweet she was, always smiling and ready with a compliment. She never complained. All of the children, grandchildren etc., nieces, and nephews worshipped her. She was such a lovely person and role model.

Cathleen is predeceased by her husband James William (Bill) Tincup, survived by her children William Tincup (Karen Stroh), Bonnie Tincup (Bruce Barker), Mary Tincup, (predeceased by her daughter Peggy Anne Tincup), 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, along with many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

No matter how long we were privileged to have her, we lost her too soon. Miss you Mom. You were a wonderful Wife, Mom, Grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. RIP
