William "Bro. Bud" Gillett - 73, a resident of Manatee County (Parrish, FL) was born October 28, 1941, and died on November 2, 2014. Bro. Bud was a pastor for 54 years for churches in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Florida. Bro. Bud was married to an amazing and Godly woman, Velma Masengale Gillett, his "sweetheart" for 54 years. He was a 1959 graduate of Palmetto High School. Bro. Bud graduated from Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee in 1964 and Southeastern Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina in 1973. Bro. Bud leaves behind his wife Velma, sons Darren (wife Michelle) and Derek Gillett and daughter, Delena (husband Scott) Jeffers; his cherished seven grandchildren: Michael, Hannah, Benjamin, Sidney, Gabriel, Ryley, and Kelsey; a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins as well as his sisters Joann Rogers, Marilyn (husband James) Oxford, and Barbara (husband Allen) Davis. Bro. Bud was the former President of the Florida Baptist Pastors' Conference, a Member of the State Board of Missions of the Florida Baptist Convention and was chosen as the Manatee County Distinguished Citizen in 2007. He will be missed by everyone he has touched through the years. A worship service will be held at First Baptist Church of Palmetto, 1020 4th St. W. at 2:30 pm, Sunday, November 16, 2014.
