Patrick James McGuire

Patrick McGuire, 65, of Somerset, formerly of Maryland, passed away on February 3, 2022, at his home in Somerset. PA. He was born in 1956, in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Thomas McGuire and Eleanor McGuire. He is also preceded in death by sister, Mary and younger sister, Barbara. Pat is survived by his former spouse, Valerie McGuire; son, Christopher McGuire; Christopher’s partner Jeffrey Kellogg; sister, Nancy Oglebay and brother-in-law Charles Oglebay; nephews Jonathan, Daniel, and Paul Oglebay and niece Catherine Oglebay. In addition, Pat is survived by his cousins: Susan Jones, Christopher (Kip) Sus, Jonathan David (Jack) Suss, Fredric Suss, Rosemary Gurel, Madeline Bishop, and Jennifer Gilmer.

Pat had a knack for making things with his hands. He was always fixing his cars or creating finished basements, sheds, or outdoor decks. Four of his favorite projects were building a combination play area to include a second story fort with slide, monkey bars, rings, swings and sandbox; another fort which was enclosed and had a trap door and hatch windows which Chris and his neighborhood friends painted green; several lattice archways, and a picnic table.

In 1974, Pat graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD, and then began to work for the American Postal Workers Health Plan (APWU) at the age of 18. Over the years he worked his way up from communication transport clerk to claims analyst. He enjoyed bowling 30 years, particularly ten-pin, and this was how he met his future wife, Valerie Ableiter, on a summer league in Howard County, MD.

Pat and Val married August 31st, 1985, and 2 years later they had a son, Christopher McGuire. They lived in Hunt Country Estates for 25 years, raising their son and a succession of dogs: Dakota, Wolf, Montana, Chance and Jake. Pat truly enjoyed singing karaoke at nearby restaurants and gravitated to songs sung by the King of rock and roll. "My Way", Elvis' special version, was a favorite of Pat's to sing. Pat retired from APWU in 2017 and moved to Somerset, PA.

A Celebration of Life Service for Patrick will be held Saturday, April 9, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park, 7250 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, MD 21075. (Reflections will be shared at 4:30PM)
