Victoria was born on July 15,1924 in Pasaje, Durango, Mexico, to Alberto and Leonor (Esquivel) Torres. She graduated from nursing school and worked at Centro Medico Hospital in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and later took on a job as a resident homecare nurse in El Paso, Texas. This home is where she met
Eugene I. Snelling, a carpenter by trade, then married him and lived together for an extended time until his death some twenty years later. She remained a widow the rest of her life. Victoria could accomplish anything she set her mind to do. She made her way into America, the legal way, and took on nursing duties to american families. Whenever someone told her something was too hard or could not be done, that only strengthened her ambitions and her abilities. She had given birth to one daughter and later, adopted one son. After retirement, she enjoyed knitting, cooking, and watching soap operas. She enjoyed visits by her grandchildren and all their kids. She loved pastries with milk or coffee. She rarely, probably never took prescribed medications. She believed wholeheartedly in herbal teas.
Victoria is survived by her daughter, Olga Galvan, Olga’s husband, Juan A. Galvan, sons Raul and Juan Galvan, daughters, Olga Garcia, Norma Gonzalez, and Lety Galvan. Included are Victoria’s son, Mario A. Snelling, his wife Maria T. Snelling, sons Mario Jr., and Michael Snelling, and daughter Ginesa Snelling, all together, adding many grandchildren. In addition are, sister Leonor Torres of Mexico, and her children, Alfredo (Pepin), Mari, Eduardo (deceased), Norma, Elvia, Sonia, and so many to fit in, but not forgotten, and brother Antonio Torres of Denmark, and his children, Lars, Adan, Morten and grandchildren.
Victoria requested many years ago to have one particular song played at her funeral services...the song “My Way” by either Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra. She said the song represents her entire life. She never gave up hope to one day live and work in America. To start a family that would flourish and be strong as she could be. And to accomplish and complete all tasks brought forth in her life. And she believed she did it all . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .her way.
