Ralph Martinez, PhD Distinguished Research Professor 1943-2013 Dr. Ralph Martinez, devoted husband, father, and UTEP faculty member, died suddenly at his home of a pulmonary embolism on Tuesday, April 2. Dr. Martinez was appointed to the position of Director of Energy Initiatives and Distinguished Research Professor at UTEP in 2010. Dr. Martinez had over thirty years of experience developing and managing research and development projects within academia, government agencies, and industry in computer networking technology. He is the author or co-author of over 150 publications in scientific journals on computer networking, distributed computing, power systems, and telemedicine applications. Most recently his work was focused on Smart Grids and Cyber Security. He had recently developed the Regional Energy and Cyber-Security Center at UTEP in collaboration with the City of El Paso. His chief love at UTEP was mentoring students and young professionals. At the time of his death, he was mentoring five full-time staff, two Ph.D. Research Associates, two graduate students, and four undergraduate students. Dr. Martinez was born on November 15, 1943 in El Paso to Ralph and Consuela Goytia. He spent his childhood and adolescence years in El Paso, graduating from Burges High School in 1961. Ralph graduated from UTEP with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1966 and 1968, respectively. He finished his Ph.D. degree at the University of Arizona in 1976. Ralph was previously married to Rena. They had four children, Mike, John, Mark and Teresa. In 2002, he married Nina in 2002. Ralph is survived by his wife, Nina, of El Paso, his children Mike (Mia) Martinez of San Diego, CA; Mark and Teresa Martinez of Tucson AZ, grandchildren: Rhianna, Max, Sophie, Olivia and Rachel; two brothers Alfonzo and Richard Martinez; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son John in 2011. He was also loved by his stepchildren Ben and Joe Van Buskirk and step-grandchildren William, Ryan, and Garett Van Buskirk. From 2002-2008, Dr. Martinez was the Chief Scientist and Technical Fellow at Balance Energy, a BAE Systems Initiative, in San Diego, CA. While at BAE, he worked on Smart Sustainable Communities, Smart Grid, and Microgrid system architecture, network infrastructure, and modeling and simulation projects. Prior to his time at BAE, he served as an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona for 23 years, as Director of the Computer Engineering Research Laboratory, and retired in 2005. At UofA, Dr. Martinez graduated 105 Master's and 16 PhD students in 23 years. Dr. Martinez holds the position of Associate Professor Emeritus in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of Arizona. He is also a member of a number of distinguished professional organizations. Harding-Orr-McDaniel Funeral Home in El Paso is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be Tuesday evening, April 9, 6:00-8:00 pm at the funeral home. The funeral will be held at St. Francis on the Hill Episcopal Church, at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 10, followed by a reception in the parish hall. Honorary pall bearers are Gilbert J.
