July 27, 1928 – August 28, 2016
James Alvin Fager passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2016. He was born on July 27, 1928, in El Paso to Ethel Minnie Martin Fager and William Luther Fager. Jim attended Lamar Elementary School and El Paso High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Texas Western College (now University of Texas at El Paso), where he also played football, primarily as a tight end. As a boy he was a Boy Scout, and worked as a ticket palmer at both the Ellanay and Wigwam Theaters. After college, he had a long, successful career as a homebuilder, having built many beautiful homes in El Paso as well as the Del Prado Apartments. In 1977, he married the love of his life, Lynn Louise Horsley, and they had a wonderful life together traveling and participating in Church and community activities, including serving on the Collectors Council of the El Paso Art Museum. Jim and Lynn were active members of Zion Lutheran Church, where they were instrumental in developing funding for the new organ. There was never a more ardent fan of the UTEP Miners football team than Jim! He enjoyed watching sports of all kinds and playing handball, and loved animals, old movies, history, and Tony Bennett (or Tony Bennetti as he called him). Jim was a consummate gentleman, always, and had a wonderful, quiet sense of humor. He faced his long illness with dignity and good spirits, endearing himself to all who knew him during that difficult time.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife of thirty-seven years, Lynn. He is survived by their daughter, Virginia Smith of Dallas, his cousin Jerrilu Martin Mallo of El Paso, and his niece Allison Ring of El Paso. The family wishes to thank caregivers Lori, Nati, Isela, and Pat who lovingly attended him. Services will be held on Saturday, September 3 at 10:00 am at Zion Lutheran Church, 2800 Pershing Drive, El Paso, Texas 79903
