Irene Garcia Barcena was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. A lifelong resident of El Paso, TX, she was the daughter of Benito Garcia and Concepcion Acosta. Irene graduated from Bowie High School in 1954 and built a career in the transportation department at Ft. Bliss.
Irene cherished traveling with her husband, daughters, and extended family, fostering a spirit of adventure and exploration. She raised independent and resilient children and grandchildren, always maintaining an optimistic outlook. Her legacy is one of strong and empowered individuals.
Irene had a passion for gardening, particularly for her beloved snapdragons and geraniums. She remained active with her high school alumni, enjoying the lunches and dances hosted by Bowie High School. Irene loved dancing and had a fondness for mariachi music and classic standards from the 1950s and 60s.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather Valentin Acosta, her husband Ruben Barcena, her companion of eight years Eduardo Comacho, and her daughters Irma Hinojosa and Arlene Valles. Irene is survived by her daughter Barbara Peralta, her grandchildren Victoria Mercado (Cesar), Valentin Hinojosa, and Adam Lukasik (Sam), and her great-granddaughter Vivian Mercado.
Irene's memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
A Visitation for Irene will be held Wednesday, June 12, 2024 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Funeraria Del Angel Hillcrest West, 5054 Doniphan Drive, El Paso, TX 79932, with a Rosary beginning at 7:30pm. A Funeral Mass will take place Thursday, June 13, 2024 at 9:00am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 2709 Alabama St, El Paso, TX 79930. An Interment will follow at 10:30am at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Ave., El Paso, Texas 79906.
