Edgar Savage Brown, Sr., born June 30, 1930 and passed away on August 6, 2024 at the age of 94. He was the beloved son of Millard Preston Brown, Sr. and Alma Savage Brown of El Paso. Edgar was a Civil Engineer until his retirement in 1993 at White Sands Missile Range, birthplace of America’s Missile & Space Activity.
While almost all of his duties at WSMR were classified, he did share with his family that Ham, the first chimpanzee to fly into space in 1961, was a visitor to his office and sat on his desk. His family was able to visit him at work during Armed Forces Days.
Edgar was a graduate of Austin High School in 1948, and played Panther football as a running back. He later played football at New Mexico State University, and studied engineering at Texas College of Mines.
Edgar and his wife Barbara, whom he met at Austin High School, celebrated 72 years of marriage May 31, 2024. They were among the first residents in Mountain Park, and Edgar was among the founding members of the Mountain Park Pool Association.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Edgar thrived in the outdoors. He loved camping with his family, and while raising them he gifted them with his own adventuresome spirit with summer vacations to his favorite National Park Wonders of the World – Yellowstone, Old Faithful, the Grand Canyon, Redwood National Park, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon and Grand Teton National Park.
His family also enjoyed treks to Colorado Springs, New Mexico’s Gila National Forest and Gila Cliff Dwellings, White Sands, Ruidoso and Cloudcroft, and the Guadalupe Mountains, Big Bend National Park, and Carlsbad Caverns of Texas. He and his wife thoroughly enjoyed cruising and traveling abroad upon retirement.
Edgar is survived by his wife, local artist Barbara M. Brown, children Edgar Savage Brown, Jr., Cathy Reynolds (Dr. John Reynolds), and Nancy Daniel Evans (Frank). He has six grandchildren, Jason (Jana), Cody (Heather), and Landon (Sarah) Amis, Edgar Savage Brown, III, (Naomi), Rebecca Romero (Paul), and Sherry Duke (James), and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Millard and Pat Brown, and sister Mary Lou Homra.
The family expresses their gratitude to Dr. Genevieve Belgrave, Dr. Nanda Gopalan, Dr. Carlo Hatem, Dr. Hector Payan, AM Hospice, and Amazing Angels Home Care.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with Rosary at 6:00 pm Thursday August 22 at Funeraria Del Angel Restlawn, 8817 Dyer. Funeral Mass will be Friday August 23 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 3729 Hueco, followed by a private burial.
