David T. Chavez, Sr.

He was a loving and caring family man, a devoted military disabled veteran of the U.S. Navy, a talented musician, and an ardent sports fan. David's passing resulted from medical complications associated with aging.

He is survived by his five children: David Chavez Jr. (Rosie), Martha Chavez, Tom (Martha Patricia), Irene Gomez Leon, and Norma Schriefer (Richard). He leaves behind ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Minerva Alvarado Chavez; his parents, Manuel Norberto and Francisca Chavez; his sister, Carmen Jemente; and his brother, Moises Chavez.

David attended Austin High School and graduated from Bowie High School. He took great pride in serving in the U.S. Navy as a recognized Amphibious Gunner’s Mate E-5 during World War II in 1944 and 1945. His assignments included service at Camp Elliot in San Diego, on the USS LST 241 in the Far East, and at Aiea Heights in Hawaii. As a disabled veteran, David remained loyal to his country throughout his life, being an active member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars until he was 92 years old. He once held the position of Sergeant-at-Arms. It was rare to see him without his military Navy hat. Ironically, he passed away on December 7, Pearl Harbor Day, a date he recalled with deep emotion, reflecting on the approximately 2,500 U.S. Navy servicemen who lost their lives in 1941.

A devoted Catholic, David attended St. Pius X Church and was admired by all who knew him for his sincere love for God. He lived by his beliefs and set a positive example for his family and community. His dedication to God was evident in his attendance at Mass and his daily recitation of the Rosary. He did everything he could for his wife, Minerva, and his children, always available to help in any way possible. David was a warm-hearted person who enjoyed engaging with everyone, regardless of race, nationality, or background. He was known for his whistling, infectious smile and laughter, a rare quality in this world.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the team at Sierra Medical Hospital for their excellent medical care, particularly Dr. Collins, as well as the hospice team for their commendable support during his last days. They also express their heartfelt gratitude to Deacon Jim Szostek for his guidance and ministry during this difficult time.

David’s sense of humor, warmth, generosity, and tireless dedication to family and friends will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a rosary at 6:00 at Funeraria Del Angel Central, 3839 Montana Ave, El Paso, TX 79903. Funeral mass will be Friday, December 20th at 10:00 AM at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1050 N. Clark Dr., El Paso, TX 79905. Interment will be in Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 2:00 PM with military honors.
