Barbara Mitchell Hyatt, born June 9, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and dedication. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Clyde Mitchell and Hermine Mitchell, as well as her first husband, Bob Hagen, and her second husband, Walter Hyatt. She is survived by her sister and her spouse Christine Funkhouser (Gus), her four beloved children and their spouses—Catherine (Steve), Gretchen (Greg), Craig (Catharine), and David (Lara)—along with her cherished grandchildren, Hannah, Byron, Christina, Hagen, Amanda, Devyn, and Simon, and her adored great-grandchild, Lily.
Barbara moved to El Paso in the late 1950s, where she quickly became a treasured part of the community. She found her calling as a travel agent, a career that allowed her to share her passion for exploration and adventure with others. Her love for travel was boundless, and she delighted in helping others experience the world. Served for years with The Junior League and later the acting President at Monte Vista.
An enthusiastic golfer and an avid card player, Barbara’s competitive spirit shone in everything she did. She approached life with joy and determination, and her friendships were marked by her warmth, humor, and grace. Barbara was very fortunate to have a plethora of friends throughout the city, but especially the group known as, “The Friday Night Gang”.
Barbara’s faith was central to her life. As a dedicated member of Saint Clements Church which she served as Lay Eucharistic Minister and on the Alter Guild, she cherished her church family and found profound meaning and community within its walls. Her faith guided her throughout her life, giving her strength and a deep sense of purpose.
Barbara Mitchell Hyatt’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her vibrant spirit, unwavering love for her family, and her passion for life.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at The Church of St. Clement, 810 N Campbell St, El Paso, TX 79902.
