Alfred J. Goytia, 77, passed away unexpectedly due to an acute gastrointestinal illness on February 04, 2017. "Freddie/Abu" cherished his youth in " El Segundo Barrio" graduating from Bowie in 1957. The first in his family to attend college he graduated in 1963 from Texas Western, where he met and married the love of his life, Gloria also from El Paso.During this time he entered the Army as an officer in the Military Intelligence and taught courses at West Point. He obtained his MBA at Thunderbird International University and went to work for Hallmark Cards International. Based in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the time a paradise, he packed up his wife and 18 month old son, Rene, and began making connections. For over thirty years he developed a lucrative market for Hallmark in the Caribbean and South America while Gloria established herself as a Spanish teacher in Ft. Buchanan. If asked however, he would say he was the one who reaped the rewards as he made such good friends in "The Islands" and included them into our family. In addition, he loved a sea bath and the island culture. The Goytia's who now had daughter, Dina, frequently traveled together on his trips. While he resided in PR for over 35 years he always remained close to his family in El Paso, taking great pride in the accomplishments of his grandchildren, nieces and nephews reminding
them of the importance of education and eating well. Successfully retired, he remained physically and mentally active. He practiced yoga, swam most days and devotedly cared for his father-in-law. He was an avid reader, emailing journal articles to family based on their interests. and took courses at OLLI. Recently he spent many an hour arguing with his republican friends. The discussions so heated it was always surprising they would speak again the next day. He will be remembered for his strong opinions, sense of humor and loyalty. He leaves his wife of 53 years, Gloria Silva Goytia, son Rene Goytia(wife Virginia), daughter
Dina Goytia-Leos(husband Chris), grandson Mateo Leos, granddaughter Xitlali Goytia, brother Gilbert Goytia(wife Celia), sister Lucille Ochoa(husband Robert), sister Cindy Reza(husband Joe) along with many nieces, nephews and great, great friends in the U.S., Puerto Rico, St. Croix and France.
