Alfonso worked for the city of El Paso for 32 years as an Engineering Inspector.
He was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and also served as a Eucharistic Minister at All Saints. He was an active part of his community as a member of the Elk’s Lodge of El Paso, and as a Fourth Degree Knight for the Knights of Columbus. During his recreational time, Poncho loved to sing and dance with “the love of his life” for hours on end.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Martha Ortiz, and their children Alfonso “Punch” Ortiz (Ceci), Patsi Martinez(J.M.), Rudy Ortiz(Marie), Lettie Ortega(Oscar), Melissa Romero(Mark).
He will be remembered for the kindness, love, compassion, and wisdom he imparted on his 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, through which his legacy will continue to live on.
Poncho had a love for reading, art, travel, learning, and working with his hands, and was truly a master-of-all-trades. He was one of the most passionate and positive people and had a great sense of humor. His jovial spirit lit up a room and anyone who met him was sure to leave with a smile.
He was preceded in death by his father Epigmenio Ortiz, mother Maria del Refugio Vallejo Ortiz, sisters Lucina, Emma, Gloria, Dora and brothers, Raul, Mario, and Jesus. He is survived by sisters, Irma and Estella and brother Rudy.
Visitation will be at 5:30 and rosary at 6:30 on Friday May 10, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1315 Travis St. Funeral Mass will be Saturday May 11, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph. Burial ceremony at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
