Mansel Hilliard Baker, Jr. 78, of Camden, formerly of El Dorado, passed away, Tuesday, February 4, 2014. He was born September 21, 1935, to Mansel H. and Gertrude Doss Baker, early settlers of Union County.
He was raised on Thompson Street in El Dorado. He lived in the old family home on what was the Thompson farm on the land between Warner Brown Hospital and Medical Center of South Arkansas in the 1880’s and early1900’s.
He graduated from El Dorado High School in 1953 where he was voted “Most Likely to Succeed”. In 1957, he graduated from Hendrix College with a math degree. He received a Rotary Scholarship and studied in Europe during College. He worked in New York City for an insurance company, then later in Austin, Texas for the Veteran’s Administration. He retired to El Dorado where he took care of his elderly parents. The last fifteen years he lived in Oak Ridge Nursing Home then moved to Pine Hills Health & Rehab in Camden. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in El Dorado and loved his Sunday school class.
He always had a smile on his face. Being an only child, Mansel is survived by no immediate family. Among his extended family are cousins Carolyn Woolley Dager, Evelyn Baker Sparks, Dr. Reid Thompson, Tignor Thompson, Candace Nobles and family friend Kay Shaddock.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 6, 2014, in the Chapel at Young’s Funeral Directors with Rev. Keith Dodson officiating. Burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.
