Our Husband, Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa, Lyman “Bruce” Boorman, 88, left this world to make a tee time in Heaven on May 24, 2024. We all love him dearly and are so happy that he’s finally at peace.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at The Immaculata Catholic Church, San Diego, California, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. The Reverend Matthew D. Spahr will officiate. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Miramar National Cemetery, San Diego. A luncheon will be held at El Cajon Mortuary following interment.
Bruce was born to Anne Sutton Boorman and Lloyd Bruce Boorman on April 11,1936, in Lemmon, South Dakota. The Boorman family was in the newspaper business since 1929 in Perkins County, South Dakota, and Bruce grew up working at the family’s weekly newspaper, The Lemmon Leader.
Bruce graduated from Lemmon High School in 1954, then attended college at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Bruce was in the Marquette band when he met the love of his life, Patricia Jane Meade, (who was the band’s majorette). While attending Marquette, he was enlisted in the Naval Reserves Officer Training Corps where he did his officer training.
After graduating from Marquette University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, Bruce spent the next two years in San Diego as an officer in the United States Navy. His Navy service included training in San Francisco and Rhode Island. He also did a West-Pac tour on the USS Sirius, spending time in Japan and the Philippines.
Bruce and Pat were married in Kingman, Kansas, on August 29, 1959. The couple moved back to Lemmon in 1960 to join his parents and sister Jane at The Lemmon Leader. Bruce later carried on the newspaper family tradition by involving his five children in the weekly publishing and printing activities, instilling work ethic and pride in a job well done. He often spoke of how proud he was of his children, and later his grandchildren, for their education and dedication to their professions.
In 1975 Bruce and Pat purchased The Lemmon Leader. While publisher and editor at the newspaper, Bruce was a voice in community, school, and civic activities. His weekly column, Bruce Says, was a candid, heartfelt, and often thought-provoking forum. Over the years at The Leader, he felt blessed by the good help, especially “The Angels,” who he cared for like family.
Bruce was active in the South Dakota Newspaper Association and served as president from 1979-1980.
In 1989 Bruce and Pat sold The Lemmon Leader and with a fresh outlook on life and not much of an agenda moved back to the San Diego area. They purchased Parker Systems Printing in El Cajon, California, working side by side doing print jobs for area businesses from 1990 to 2021.
While in business in El Cajon, Bruce was active in the business networking group LeTip. He also served as a board member of the Printing Industry of San Diego.
Bruce was a Lions Club member, in Lemmon and El Cajon, for nearly 60 years, and in 2011 he was honored with the highest honor bestowed upon a Lion when the Lions Club International Foundation made him a Melvin Jones Fellow, recognizing his outstanding service as a Lion.
Bruce’s recognition in 1983 that “there is someone greater than BB in charge of life and living” changed his life. He was actively involved in the AA community for 40 years, developing lifelong friendships as he continued his journey of recovery and offered support to others.
In addition to watching Fox News, eating popcorn, and cooking a great steak, Bruce was family famous for his waffles, Mr. Fix-It talents, and a good word of advice on many topics. Bruce loved to golf, travel, and spend time with his family and many friends.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia, Santee, California; children, Mary Petersen (Dave), Watertown, South Dakota; Bill (Rosemary), Vienna, Virginia; Margaret Row (Jim), Houston, Texas; Jeanne Sands (Todd), Spearfish, South Dakota; and Loretta Antuna (Steve), Henderson, Nevada; grandchildren, Tony Petersen (Lauryn), Stefanie Roby (Matt), Nick Petersen (Jessica), Emily Antuna, Taylor and Tyler Sands, Catalina and Billy Row; and great-grandchildren, Clara and Anders Petersen; Bennett, Griffin, Hannah, and Sutton Roby; and Elliott, Miles, and Samuel Petersen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Jane Boorman and Catherine Becker, and grandson-in-law, Marty Kranz.
We know Bruce would like us all to remember his closing from the last Bruce Says column published in The Lemmon Leader:
Do I have any “parting shots” to deliver? No, but there is a suggestion.
Everyone needs some work on.... their attitudes and outlook on life,
and the easiest way to do this is to SMILE.
Thanks, and God Bless You, and please SMILE.
