Hazel Edith (Mueller) Lisk, the daughter of Otto and Martha Mueller was born in Neenah, Wisconsin on a spring day--May 25th, 1936. Hazel was the eleventh of thirteen children in the family. She was baptized into God’s family at Trinity Lutheran Church in Neenah. Hazel spent her early childhood years growing up on the family farm. One of her chores was to gather eggs from the henhouse—a chore she she later said that she didn’t like because the hens were not willing to give up their eggs readily! Hazel attended Trinity Lutheran School. Sometime during her childhood she ran into a rambunctious boy named John Lisk. It was by no means “love at first sight.” Young Hazel once kicked John while wearing ice skates and gave him a scar that he would have on his shin for the rest of his life. After graduating from Neenah High School she worked for Kimberly Clark and began dating John Lisk, who had enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Soon the two were married. Hazel made sure that John took Christian instruction and church became a central part of their lifelong marriage. The couple had two children: Rebecca Sue born in Memphis, TN in 1959 and Kevin John born in Escondido, CA in 1962. John’s career in the Navy meant that Hazel and the two children would be moving frequently. It also meant that Hazel would frequently be left to run the household while John was sent overseas for months at a time. In 1981 Hazel and John left San Diego, CA and moved back to Wisconsin where they spent just under a decade living close to their relatives. After experiencing several Wisconsin winters Hazel and John decided to return to San Diego. Hazel and John lived with daughter Becky for several months while they searched for a home. They spent the next 30 years of their life in that home until the Lord called them both home to heaven.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, and all of her siblings except three sisters. She is survived by those four sisters: Grace Danielson, Jackie Jones, Lois Hoppe, and Jeanette Verrier, by her children: Becky (Rick) Danielson and Kevin (Tiffany) Lisk, by five grandchildren: Joel (Tiffany) Danielson, Megan (Michael) Gibbon, John (Lily) Lisk, Jordan Lisk, and Bethany Lisk, and by two great grandchildren: Maverick and Maxwell Danielson.
Hazel spent her final days at Felicita Vida in Escondido. Hazel’s family thanks the staff there for all the care they provided. Her life was an amazing journey, but now, because of Christ, she finally was able to “go home” into the arms of her Savior on September 5, 2023.
