Gerald Vincent Smith, "Gerry to his friends, "Sonny" to his family, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024. He was born on August 28, 1930, in Joliet, Illinois. Gerry is survived by his daughter Jacqueline Smith, granddaughter Kristy Tompkins Dettweiler, grandson-in-law Brian Dettweiler, great-grandchildren Jack and Katherine, and his nieces and nephews, Joseph V. Ambrozich, Amy Ambrozich Knapp, Joseph E. Ambrozich, Claire Ambrozich, Michael Lopez, Cathy Bowman, and Carol Anderson. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine Crescenti Smith, with whom he shared more than 60 years of marriage before her passing in 2014.
In 1952, Gerry joined the United States Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. After his military service, Gerry worked as an Aeronautics Engineer for General Dynamics from 1954 to 1985, retiring after a successful career.
In retirement, Gerry found joy in many pursuits, including golf, and travel. He particularly enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, Mesquite, and Europe, where he explored eleven different countries, Austria being his favorite! His love of life and sense of humor were contagious, and he was known for his funny sayings that would bring smiles to everyone around him.
Gerry and his wife Catherine "Kay" enjoyed dancing to Big Band music at the Elks Lodge in El Cajon, establishing friendships and creating many cherished memories over the years. He was also an active member of the International Catholic Families at Our Lady of Grace Church in El Cajon, where he contributed to the community for many years.
Gerry will be missed by his family and friends, whose lives were enriched by his kindness, humor, and wisdom. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
