Frederick Carl DeWitt 83, a devoted Husband, Father and Grandpa passed away on October 23, 2024 in San Diego, California. Fred was born in Washington D.C. on January 10, 1941 to Martha and Frederick Smail. He moved to San Diego in his teenage years and later graduated from Kearny High School. After high school he joined the military and served in the Navy from 1959 to 1978 as a Submarine Radio Equipment Operator. He married his first wife Helen Quelch in 1962, and had three children Michael, Christina and Theresa. He served several overseas duty tours which included Spain, Scotland, Japan and Hawaii. After Fred retired from the Navy, he began his second career working for the U.S. Post Office for 20 years. Fred loved spending time with his family and friends. Some of his favorite things to do included traveling, fishing, gardening and country line dancing. At 59, he remarried Kay Finley, and they spent 24 happy years together traveling the country in their R.V. and cruising around the world. Fred is survived by his loving wife, 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. Fred’s memorial will be held on November 26, 2024 at 12:30 at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Society. Fred may you have fair winds and following seas, until we meet again.
