Elizabeth Mary Smith passed away on February 20th, 2018. Beth was born on Dec. 25th, 1927, to Jeoffrey Lycurgus Robinson and Eileen Stella Loman in Santa Monica, California and raised in the desert town of Trona. As loved and revered by her family as any person could be, it was said she was a “matriarch with a heart”. This was displayed daily by her actions, supporting Catholic charities, taking in the poor and disadvantaged, being a mother to many beyond her cherished children.
Beth will be met in heaven by her dearest husband the Honorable Donald Smith, son Geoffrey, granddaughter Megan, and brothers Mark, Malcolm, Michael, and Bruce. She is survived and beloved by her children Matthew (Pam), Peter (Rita), Suzanne (Bill), Sara (Steve), John (Beatriz), daughter-in-law Christine, sister Eileen and brother Bill, as well as her eleven grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She attended Flintridge High School and later in life went back to San Diego State University and received a bachelor degree in Spanish.
In life, Beth loved her family, her Church, and the Democratic Party. She was an avid traveler who took trips to every corner of the globe to meet new people, expand her worldview, and learn about our common experiences. In the summers and at Christmas, she hosted her family for weeks at a time, playing with grandchildren and extend family who lovingly called her “Ba” and talking the latest news of the Church, U.S. politics, and global events. In quiet times, she loved a glass of chardonnay with an ice cube and a good book or film. She will be remembered for her beauty, humor, and grace.

Goodbye Ba. I will miss your soft voice, your laugh, your stories, spending hours exploring your house of treasures, eating moo cow cheese cubes and soft boiled eggs with lady fingers, washing my feet 17 times so I don't get sand in your house after going to the beach, and so much more. You were loved and adored by so many Lady Smith, and you will be truly missed.

As everyone has been saying, my grandma Ba was truly 90 years young. She was the definition of “life goals”. Growing up my grandparents’ house was open to everyone and everyone was family. She was a true role model for me; in style, etiquette, education, world travel, and of course traits like patience and kindness. She was beautiful inside and out. She had a great sense of humor and you were always in on the joke. Always laughing with you and never at you. I will miss her visits, text messages (with emojis ♥️), and thank you cards. She lived a full life, and I know she will be dearly missed by many family and friends.

My beautiful and wonderful grandmother passed yesterday unexpectedly. She was a larger than life figure to our family. Although she was 90, it was a shock for everyone as we all assumed Ba would be with us for many more years. Her loss is devastating but her life was filled with a lot of joy, faith, and love. We will remember all those good times, celebrate her life, and be thankful for the time we were given with her knowing that now she is with my grandfather and at peace.

Pete Maestas:
Dearest Beth,
I first met you when I was just 10 years old when your youngest son John brought me up to your house on Random Road. We became best friends, and over the next 47 years I got to known you, first as my best friend’s mom, and then later as part of the family I married into. In those 47 years you have always been a shining beacon of wisdom, you were never judgemental, always ready to help, with a great sense of humour and a smile. I have never heard you say a bad word about anyone and that is what made you so special. In fact so special, that I considered you to be my second Mom, or as you put it “Other Mom”. You will be sorely missed by all, and I will certainly never forget you. Rest in peace “Other Mom”.
With love from your “Other Son” Peter. x

It’s hard to put into words how much Ba means to me, as she’s been a great
presence in my life despite the distance between us. Over the years I’d come to
know Ba as another grandmother. She was always happy to offer a hug, wisdom,
kind words or a funny story whenever I saw her. I’l always remember her bright
and sunny personality, and of course her wonderful fashion sense too! I have many
fond memories of Beth and was looking forward to seeing her this year during a
visit to America. l always cherish our memories together and l miss you lots Ba,
Rest In Peace.
Love Jo x
Amy Maestas:
Beth, from my experiences with you to the memories shared with your family and friends, it is clear you have always been a beautiful soul, who many of us feel lucky to have known. How you lived your life is truly an inspiration, as you cared for and loved those around you, whether they were close family or extended across the pond. But the care and love was reciprocol, and you will live on in our hearts and memories.
Love,
Amy
