May 7, 1920 ~ May 2, 2014
William Maxwell Bateman, beloved husband to Gaye (Lister) Bateman for 64 years, passed away peacefully on Friday, may 2, 2014. He is an adored father to Kathryn (Patrick) O’Neill, Paul Bateman, Anne (Richard) Gauthier and Leslie (Warren) Kershaw. He is “Grandpa” to eight loving grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is a caring brother to Dr. Veda Bateman of Knoxville, Tennessee and his late brother, Raynard Bateman of California.
Bill was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, raised in the United States. He returned to Canada to join the RCAF during WWII, serving as a pilot in the RAF and was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. Bill received his degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Toronto in 1949. Bill enjoyed a long and successful career as a professional engineer in the construction business. Retirement was not in his DNA.
Bill enjoyed regular games of bridge and enjoyed nothing more than time on the golf course with family and friends. However, his greatest joy and lasting legacy remains the building of the family cottage on Lake Rosseau, Ontario. A private family service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church. In memory of Bill, a reception for family and friends will be held in Edmonton at Bill’s golf club on Saturday, May 24, 2014 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm. In Bill’s name, in lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate donations to the Greater Edmonton Poppy Fund, 10720-101 Street, Edmonton, AB T5H 2S3 or to a charity of one’s choice.
