It is with disbelief and deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Dr. Shyamala Nagendran at the age of 68. Shyamala is survived by her devoted husband of 49 years, Jay; her sons, Jayan (Jessica) and Jeevan; along with grandchildren, Danishta, Ryan, and James. She is also survived by her brother Giri Ratnasingham (Montse Brunet), nephew Marc, and niece Elsa.
Shyamala is remembered for her tenacious spirit and perseverance toward achieving higher education. She gave back by volunteering to help serve the elderly and to help women and children in need. She was blessed with a dedicated life partner in Jay. They shared a lifetime of genuinely happy memories and trips together around the world.
Shyamala was beyond proud of her two sons, Jayan and Jeevan, who have earned the highest level of respect in society for the life-saving work they do for Canadians. Shyamala loved her three grandchildren deeply. She was thrilled to see them grow and succeed in all aspects of life. Shyamala loved her younger brother Giri, as well as her extended family.
Shyamala was dearly supported by the Sri Lankan community, sharing in countless uplifting social gatherings. Though she left Sri Lanka in 1975, she was surrounded by the traditions and people from her homeland. This made Edmonton the best place on earth for her to live out her dreams beyond her expectations.
