She was born in Grande Prairie, AB on April 16, 1950, the eldest child of Elwood and Jean Rooney. Her formative years were spent in Dimsdale, Clairmont and Grande Prairie. In 1967 she ventured to Edmonton to train as a Registered Nurse at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, graduating in 1970. Over her 45 years working as an RN at the RAH, Sharon practiced at a high standard forming many friendships in all areas. Her Royal Alexandra alumni status of 50 years was very important to her.
In 1985, Sharon met Joe R McDonald and they married on August 30, 1986. Sharon and Joe enjoyed travelling, camping, horseback riding, watching chuck wagon races and of course, their beloved dogs. They lived several years on an acreage in Ardrossan before settling in their final home in Sherwood Park.
Sharon was very active with the Daughters of the Nile, often taking trips with them. She enjoyed bowling, golfing and managing her beautiful yard. Hosting family dinners and playing cards were favourite pastimes.
Sharon is survived by her sisters Arlene Rooney and Laurel Reynolds, her brother Garnet Rooney and his wife Cathie Helgeson, her niece Chandra Rooney, her nephews Corey and Kyle Reynolds, and her current beloved dog Gypsy. She will also be missed by her Leslie cousins and many close friends.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Joe in 2007, her parents Elwood and Jean Rooney, her nephew Tyler Reynolds and her brother-in-law Doug Reynolds.
A private funeral (by invitation only) will be held Wednesday October 7, 2020 at 1 pm at Hainstock’s Funeral Home in Edmonton. A live streaming of the service will be available at https://www.oneroomstreaming.com/view/authorise.php?k=160195909479798 to those unable to attend.
A family inurnment will take place at a later date in Grande Prairie.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, Heart and Stroke or Cancer research, or to a charity of one’s choice.
