On Monday, January 9, Harjogindar Singh Sidhu passed away in Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 83. He was born in the village of Sema, Punjab, India before the family settled in Muktsar, Punjab. He was predeceased by his 2 older sisters Surjit Kaur and Balwant Kaur and one older brother Harminder Singh.
He immigrated to Canada in 1967 and obtained his Civil Engineering degree from the University of Windsor in 1972. He worked initially at Eurocan in Kitimat and then with Stanley Engineering in Edmonton in the 1970s. After a few years spent in India, a return to Canada followed. Eventually settling in Fort McMurray with a job as an operator at Syncrude.
In 2001 a heart bypass resulted in the decision to retire and a move to Edmonton. Retirement years were spent volunteering at nursing homes, reading, daily walks and time with family and friends punctuated by trips, cruises and visits with distant friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Parmpal Kaur (Saharan) and 2 sons Harneil (Christina) and Harjot (Christie) as well as 4 grandchildren.
He was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia in 2019 which started a long health journey. With his tireless wife by his side and many amazing caregivers, he dealt with every setback with dignity and composure. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.
A Memorial Service will be held on January 14th at 1 pm at Hainstock Funeral Home followed by Bhog (religious prayer ceremony) at Gurdwara Siri Singh Sabha.
