With deep sorrow, the family of Ann Peterson announce her peaceful passing on April 14, 2018, at the age of 79 years. Ann was predeceased by her parents, Bill and Margaret Mitchell. She leaves to mourn her siblings, Dave (Shirley), Heather, Frank (Ann), her son Les (Wina), daughter Laura (Randy), adopted daughter Rhonda and her beloved grandchildren as well as her nieces and nephews.
Ann was an avid reader and enjoyed learning a great deal. She was awarded the Governor Generals award for highest marks in her grade upon completing High School. She completed her BSc in Home Economics in 1959 and her Bachelor of Education in 1968. She completed her Masters of Science in 1975, with a major in behavioural science. Ann graduated from a computer systems program at NAIT in 1978 and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth prize for academic achievement. She then worked for the government for a couple years and then taught at NAIT as an instructor until her retirement. Ann read several books each week and demonstrated a significant breadth of knowledge related to a wide variety of topics. She attended courses through the Edmonton Lifelong Learners Association (ELLA) at the U of A for many years.
Ann attended McDougall United Church in Edmonton for over 30 years and she volunteered in many capacities within the church and enjoyed supporting community projects to strengthen children and families in the local and international communities.
Ann enjoyed volunteering with the Alberta Home Economics Association for many years. She attended conventions locally, nationally (Ottawa, and Toronto) and internationally (Norway). She also participated in a project in Egypt to enhance nutrition for families. Ann served as the president of the AHEA for two terms and was a member of the executive for another term.
Ann enjoyed a variety of creative endeavours. She learned to sew before age five on her mother’s treadle sewing machine and she completed many projects in her lifetime for herself or for family members. She also enjoyed weaving, quilting, needlepoint, crocheting, and knitting. After retirement, she volunteered in the school setting, teaching children how to knit. Ann also enjoyed music a great deal and she attended many concerts, movie musicals, and theatre productions.
Love was a core trait for Ann. She made her life choices based on her love for her family. She also expressed love to many members of the community. Those who have been in her reciprocal circle of love will miss her dearly.
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude and heartfelt thanks to Dr. Namita Rao and Dr. Pang, the nursing staff of Unit 53 and 5 East for their exemplary care. A very special thank you and deepest gratitude to Ann’s Angels who provided loving nursing care to Mom. We will be forever grateful to you.
