Al and his sister Pat grew up in the Highlands under the loving care of their grandparents Thomas and Ollie Young. It was here that he formed a lifelong friendship with his partner in crime, Ken Purdie. A strong student and gifted athlete, Al had many wonderful memories of the north side. But love had other plans, and it would be the tall, dark haired, pink cheeked Bettie Dawe who would lure him to the south side of the city. Our parents would have celebrated 70 incredible years of marriage this spring.
Intelligent and hardworking, wise and respectful, he exuded fairness and humor in both his professional and private life. There were few as kind and generous; none so admired. Al’s 40 year career with Imperial Oil led to relocations and a variety of travels, but Edmonton was always home. And the Oilers and Esks his teams.
While the love of his life was his Bettie, and his endless pride his children Kelly (Dianne), Maureen (Gil) and Michael (Jutta), it was spending time with his grandchildren that brought him his greatest joy. He will be sorely missed by Meghan (Calgary, AB), Michael (Bali, ID), Joshua & Iris (London, UK), Calvin & Laura (San Jose, CA) and Daniel (Halifax, NS). We love you to the moon, Grandpa.
Al is also fondly remembered by his siblings David and Janet, extended family and a wonderful host of friends and neighbors.
Rest peacefully, our Gunga Din. Until we meet again around our family table.
