Juanita worked most of her adult life as a Federal Employee attached to the U.S. Air Force. While living in post WWII Germany in the 1950s, she had a top-secret security clearance. While living in San Antonio, TX, she was the Commander's secretary at the Lackland AFB's Language School & the Commander's secretary at Randolph AFB. Ann always teased that she ran Randolph AFB as the General rotated in & out. While working at the Language School she met the Shah of Iran after he was deposed. Once she invited a group of Arabic students from the Language School to dinner serving smoked turkey. She told the student s that people often say smoked turkey tastes like ham. Everyone was surprised when one of the men agreed. Juanita continued corresponding with several of the General & their aides until her passing.
Juanita was an accomplished singer, pianist & theorist. She sang in church choirs all her life until finally retiring at age 93. She exercised before it was popular, walking every day after lunch. She was a volunteer at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center delivering plants to newly admitted patients on eight of the 10 floors every Monday morning for 14 years.
Juanita was generous to a fault always opening her home to those in need, giving monetary gifts to family & friends during difficult times. She even booted Karen out of her bedroom when a family suddenly found themselves homeless until they could make other living arrangements.
She became a devout member of the Orthodox Christian Church converting from the Methodist Church in 1998. She was a member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in San Antonio until she moved to Edmond in 2004 joining the St. Elijah parish. While at St. Elijah, she was a member of Ladies Aid, the Choir, the Thursday Morning Study Fellowship & Altar Guild. She also worked tirelessly at every bake sale & helped with Vacation Bible School. She attended most all services during the week until Covid-19 caused everyone to stay at home. She was no longer able to attend services afterwards.
She was a loving mother, grandmother & great-grandmother. Even though she worked, she made sure every visiting grandchild saw the local sites, including local caves, the snake and alligator farms & more. She even climbed one of the pyramids Teotihuacan outside of Mexico City. She babysat all her great-grandchildren until she was at least 85 years old. She was an inspiration to each of us and we will miss her terribly.
May her memory be eternal!
A funeral service for Juanita will be held Friday, December 27, 2024 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Elijah Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church, 15000 N May Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73134.
