Warren Norwood, age 84, died Friday, October 15, 2010 at his daughter’s home. He was a member of Hurricane Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon. He was a graduate of Pinedale High School, where he was an All State Basketball player from 1944 to 1946. He was awarded a basketball scholarship to Delta State College and was drafted into the Occupational Forces to serve in the Army in Japan. He retired from the MDOT as an inspector in the Engineering Department of the New Albany office, after forty-one years of service. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed the art of trading.
Services will be at 3:00 PM Sunday, October 17, 2010 at Hurricane Baptist Church with Rev. Philip Brock, Rev. Kevin Merritt and Rev. Doug Jones officiating; burial will follow in the Sand Springs Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Ecru is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his daughter: Susan Jayne Hooker (Graden) of Pontotoc; one sister: Louise Kyle of Coldwater, MS; two grandsons: Cade Hooker (Megan) and Colt Hooker (Brooke); four great grandchildren: Sophie, Aden, Ella Kate and Braxton Hooker.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Robert L. Norwood and Cordie Warren Norwood; his spouses: Sis Norwood of 56 years and Mary Norwood;one son: Larry Graham Norwood; three sisters: Mable Dorsett, Blanche Baird and Jewel Norwood; five brothers: A.M. Norwood, Sr., Stanley Norwood, Colonel “Buck” Norwood, Holder Norwood and Calvin Norwood.
Pallbearers will be: Zubie Parrish, Phil Warren, Phil Robbins, Lynn Robbins, Howard Carnes and Melvin Dorrough. Honorary Pallbearer will be: Roy Dillard.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 PM Saturday at the funeral home and Sunday from 2 to 3 PM at Hurricane Baptist Church.
