Corporal Michael Flaherty, 52, of East Stroudsburg passed away on Friday, August 7, in his home surrounded by his loving family after fighting a long and courageous battle with ocular melanoma which metastasized into uveal melanoma. He was the husband of Stephanie (Muller) Flaherty with whom he celebrated 12 years of marriage, the proud father of sons Ryan (27), Liam (10) and Conor (5), and amazing friend and colleague of those he worked with and those he served. Born in Montclair, N.J., he was the son of the late Pauline and Francis Flaherty. He was a graduate of East Stroudsburg High School and Lincoln Tech, Allentown, Pa.
Michael began his career in law enforcement as an officer at the Monroe County Correctional Facility in Stroudsburg. Most recently, he was employed at East Stroudsburg University as a police officer since 2012 and served as a member of the East Bangor Police Department since 2010. During his career he also worked as a member of the Nazareth and Roseto Police Departments and the Monroe County DUI Processing Center in Snydersville.
Michael served his community as a volunteer with Cub Scout Pack 100 and the East Stroudsburg Little League through the years as a means of spending important family time with his sons. He also enjoyed golf, but most especially cherished the time he could spend with his wife, his children and his friends. Michael will always be remembered by his colleagues and friends for his positivity, kind words and swift action to help those in need.
In addition to his wife Stephanie and his three sons, Michael is survived by: two sisters, Wendy (Nick) Sheyka of Bloomfield N.J., and Doreen Flaherty of Orange City, Fla.; one brother, James (Barbara) Flaherty of Melbourne, Fla.; one niece and two nephews.
Visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday, August 12 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Lanterman and Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg with services to follow at 3 p.m. at St. Matthews Catholic Church, 200 Brodhead Avenue, in East Stroudsburg. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Ocular Melanoma Foundation at http://www.ocularmelanoma.org/. Scholarship funds are also being established for Michael’s sons.
