Born in Chattanooga, TN, to the late Joe and Ruth Hornsby, Richard was a man of unwavering kindness, sharp wit, and quiet generosity. His nephew, Tim Baker, also precedes him in death.
As a Christian, Richard's faith shaped his values of forgiveness and compassion. Professionally, he was a manager at Lowe’s and played an instrumental role in establishing Lowe’s Contractor Yard in Chattanooga.
Richard was an avid sports fan, with an unmatched passion for the Tennessee Volunteers. Saturdays in the fall were often filled with spirited cheering and a fair bit of playful sarcasm, reflecting his disarming sense of humor. Never one to take himself too seriously, Richard’s quick wit and self-deprecating jokes brought laughter and joy to those around him.
Above all, Richard’s greatest joy was his role as "Poppie" to his beloved grandchildren. Whether cheering them on at their concerts, sharing stories, or simply spending time together, he cherished every moment with his family. Though he sometimes appeared steadfast in his opinions, Richard’s actions often revealed his immense heart. He made quiet sacrifices to provide for others and sought reconciliation in ways that were only discovered after his passing.
He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Debi Hornsby; his son, Chad (Danida) Dukes; his treasured grandchildren, Daniel, Elizabeth, Hanna, and Ezekial “EZ” Dukes; his sisters-in-law, Shelley Cruze and Tina Broom; his brother-in-law, John Broom; his niece, Christy (Christopher) Dudley; his nephews, Jonathan (Jenny) Broom and Eric (Lisa) Baker; his great-nephews, Miles Baker, Cade and Colby Broom; his great-nieces, Phoebe Broom and Ivory Dudley; and many other cherished family members and friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 13, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Chattanooga Valley Presbyterian Church, 3371 Chattanooga Valley Rd, Chattanooga Valley, GA 30725, followed by a celebration of life at 12:00 PM with Pastor Dennis Louis officiating. A private interment will be held at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Richard’s honor to a charity of your choice, as a reflection of his generous and caring spirit.
Arrangements are under the care of Chattanooga Funeral Home Crematory and Florist-East Chapel, 404 South Moore Rd. East Ridge, TN 37412.
