Jim was born and raised in Memphis, TN. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and served his country well and retired after 25 years in the U. S. Air Force.
Jim was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened. He loved God, life and his family. He lived a very blessed life. Jim will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his laughter, his strength, his loyalty to his country and he was an inspiration to all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Janie Murphey Oakes.
Surviving are his father, James L. Oakes, Sr.; wife of 31 years, Anne Oakes; son, Justin (Tara) Oakes of John’s Creek, GA.; daughter, Jessica (Michael) Maples of Stedman, NC.; grandchildren, Aiden, Aaron and Addison; and sister, Beth (Buck) Hudson of Jackson, TN.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 PM on Friday, August 29, 2014 at the funeral home.
A Memorial Service will follow at 2 PM at the funeral home with Rev. Debbie Stokes officiating.
Inurnment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga (4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37415).
The family would like to express their gratitude for the prayers, loving support, meals, and cards offering hope and encouragement. Special gratitude goes to the doctors and nurses at the Erlanger Oncology floor and Dr. Schlabach specifically for his love and care during the past 3 ½ years.
