Gary was born on June 2, 1947 to the late Marcus Free and Leola Bell Wood. Gary graduated Central high School and was a member of the Class of 1965. After retiring he took up gardening which he enjoyed very much. Gary was an avid golfer and had club memberships at both Brainerd Golf Club and Brown Acres. He also enjoyed bowling. Gary was a big fan of both the Atlanta Braves and the UT Vols. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved Jesus more than anything and never wavered in his faith. Gary and his wife Nancy were members of and attended Brainerd Hills Baptist Church where they attended the Brackett Sunday School Class.
He was preceded in death by his aforementioned parents, his sister Florene Stancil, and his brothers TJ and Bobby Wood and nephews Phillip Stancil and Gary Dean Harding.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years Nancy Banks Wood, his daughter and son in law Lindsay and Jeff Daughtery, his grandchildren Pearl and Felix Daughtery, nieces Anne Langston, Claudia Davis, Shelley and Kelley Banks, nephews David; Danny; and Jimmy Stancil, Mark Wood, Scott and Greg Nesbitt, and, sister-in-law LaDora Nesbitt, brothers-in-law Jimmy and Richard Banks, and many dear friends including his beloved dog, Sparky.
A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Thursday September 8, 2022 at 1:00 pm with Rev. David Stancil officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday September 7, 2022 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Gary will be laid to rest in the Chattanooga Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to Brainerd Hills Baptist Church and/or Hospice of Chattanooga.
