Loved by all who knew him
Our North Star, great patriarch, Daddy, and Papa, Burtram Clay (Sam) Sutherland, entered into the presence of Jesus on December 26, 2023, twenty-one days after his 92nd birthday, surrounded by his adoring daughters and sons-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Jewell Mansel Sutherland, parents Samuel William Sutherland and Ruby Watley Sutherland, and sister Billie Justine Sutherland, who died before he was born.
Sam was born in Chattanooga, TN in 1931, and was a 1950 graduate of Central High School. He was a Sargent in the US Army and served during The Korean War. He married the love of his life, Jewell Mansel, on March 29, 1958. He was a resident of East Ridge for over 60 years. Sam was employed at DuPont as an insulator from 1950 until his retirement. After retirement, he enjoyed working with his son in law Allen at The Radio Clinic and then later at Home Depot until he became the full time caretaker of his wife Jewell until her death in 2016.
Sam was known for his quick wit and sense of humor, his sharp mind and kindness to all. He had a generous and giving heart, teaching us to always think of others. He was a devout follower of Jesus, and loved the deep study of His word. He taught Sunday School for many years and was a Deacon in the Baptist Church. He was a member of Graceworks Church since 2016.
His love for his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren always took precedence over everything. He loved them with every fiber of his being and showed it in the way he nurtured, guided, directed and advised them in life. He was known for his great wisdom and discernment and his advice was sought out frequently.
He is survived by his two daughters, Nancy (Mike) Tucker, Chattanooga, and Jill (Allen) Forgey, Ooltewah; six grandchildren, Jeff (Alayna) Tucker, Sam (Rachel) Forgey, Kevin (Ashley) Tucker, Amy (Andrew) Hughes, Bryan (Caitlin) Tucker, Will (Morgan) Forgey; and eleven great-grandchildren, Jack, Zinnia, Abby, Kamden, Harry, Beau, Henry, Andrew, Goldie, Sunny, Leo and baby Forgey, due April, 2024.
