Mary Elizabeth Owens Hall passed away on May 6, 2013. She was 85. She was born on July 5, 1927 in East Point where she remained a resident for her entire life.
Dr. Hall was a Registered Nurse, having graduated from Emory University Nursing School, attaining the highest GPA in the school’s history. In 1962 she returned to her alma mater, completed her Masters Degree in Nursing and joined the faculty as an instructor. She served on the faculty of the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University for almost 30 years. She earned another Masters Degree from Georgia State University in Urban Development and then an interdisciplinary PhD from Emory, focusing on public health policy. While on the faculty she had a major role in the development of the school’s public health nursing program, as well as the Nurse Practitioner program. She also served as the interim Dean of the school in the 80’s. She loved teaching and she loved Emory University.
Known as Betty to her family and friends, she was also very active in First Baptist Church of East Point, GA. She served faithfully in many capacities including coordinating the nursery program, teaching Sunday School for a variety of ages, singing in the choir, and serving as a deacon. She was also involved in the Women’s Missionary Union, serving not only in her church, but also in the WMU for the Atlanta Baptist Association where she was president for five years.
Always desiring to serve others, after retiring from Emory, she returned part-time to her local Public Health Center. She also taught ESL classes through her church.
Dr. Hall was preceded in death by her beloved Bobby (Robert T. Hall Jr.) who died in December 2006. She is survived by her two sons, Robert David Hall of Douglasville, Georgia and William Daniel (Danny) Hall of Livermore, California, her two daughters-in-law, Judi and Ginger, and her two grandchildren, Julie Hall of St. Petersburg, Florida and Christopher Hall of Culver City, California.
Visitation will take place at Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home in East Point on Friday, May 10th from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. Funeral services will be in the main sanctuary of First Baptist Church of East Point at 2:00PM, Saturday, May 11th, followed by burial at West View Cemetery.
