Kaye Elwood Scott, a devoted husband, proud veteran, and accomplished engineer, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at the age of 91. Born in Byron, Michigan, to Reginold Scott and Emily Chitwood, Kaye grew up alongside his siblings Audrey Howard, John Scott, and Lyle Scott.
Kaye married his high school sweetheart, Loraine Johnson (Scott), and together they shared 72 years of love and laughter. Despite the loss of their two children, Vickie Kaye Hoisington and Craig D. Scott, their bond remained unshakable. After Loraine’s passing in September 2023, Kaye carried her memory with him every day, honoring the life they built together.
A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Kaye served with the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron in Keflavik, Iceland—the "Black Knights of Iceland"—where he worked on airplane radios and electrical systems. After his service, Kaye’s engineering career included helping design the navigation system for the Lunar Rover—a humble Midwesterner helping humanity drive on the moon.
Kind, curious, and thoughtful, Kaye had a gift for storytelling. Whether sharing tales from his Air Force days or adventures with Loraine, his stories always left an impression, often as much for the journey as for the destination.
Kaye is survived by his grandchildren, Joshua, Lindsay, and Jeffrey Hoisington, as well as his great-grandchildren, Odessa and Vienna Hoisington. His legacy of humor, warmth, and quiet brilliance will live on in his family and in anyone who was lucky enough to know him. Somewhere, Kaye is surely telling a story—one we’d all love to hear—while his memory carries on, all the way to the moon.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Kaye’s life on Monday, November 26th at Gorsline-Runciman East Lansing Chapel located at 1730 E. Grand River Ave. East Lansing, MI 48823 from 12-1pm with a burial to take place at Evergreen Cemetery.
