Gary S. Olson, age 57, died September 18, 2012 after a four year battle with melanoma. He was born in Lansing on June 29, 1955 and is a graduate of Mio-Au Sable High School. Gary graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Michigan and a Master’s Degree from Michigan State University in Economics. After 32 years of service to the Michigan Legislature, Gary retired after 20 years as Director of The Senate Fiscal Agency. Following his retirement he became a Senior Policy Fellow for Public Sector Consultants. Gary was Staff Chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures and President of the National Association of Legislative Fiscal Officers.
Gary was a recipient of many honors and awards. In 2010, Gary was awarded the Steven D. Gold Award for outstanding contributions to state and local government financial management. This national award is given to one individual each year.
Gary was a 20 year member of the Lansing Rotary Club and served on the Rotary Club Foundation Board of Directors. He served on the Michigan League for Human Services Board, Lansing Community College Foundation Board, WKAR Community Advisory Board and was past president of the Greater Lansing University of Michigan Alumni Club.
Having a love of travel, Gary and his wife Teresa visited many areas of the world and enjoyed new cultures and experiences. Gary was an avid reader of the news, cooking magazines, and sports. He enjoyed talking about current events and sporting activities especially golf. Gary loved to cook, try new recipes, hike, golf and enjoyed many outdoor activities here and at his summer home on Lake Michigan. Gary loved UM sports! Go Blue!
Anyone who was acquainted with Gary knew he was a quiet man of integrity, sincerity, honor and responsibility.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Teresa (Winkler) Olson, his parents, David and Emily Olson of Traverse City, his 2 brothers, David (Betsy) Olson of Traverse City and their three children, Nicholas, Elizabeth and Sarah (Adam) Clark; Paul (Corrine) Olson of Grayling and Paul’s three children, Erik, Scot and Michael. Also surviving are 2 aunts, Irma Powell and Carole Hund, several cousins and a great-nephew and niece.
A memorial service will be held at Michigan State University Club, 3435 Forest Dr., Lansing,on Saturday, September 22 at Noon. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the club.
