Emerson William Ebert of East Lansing, MI passed away Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024 at the age of 99. Born Feb. 26, 1925 in Washington, IL to George W. and Celia (Naffziger) Ebert. Emerson honorably served 3 years with the US Navy during WWII stationed in San Diego, CA. He graduated from Bradley University (Peoria, IL) in 1950 where he met and married the former Marjorie Bartels of Pekin, IL on Sept. 3rd, 1949, with the couple later moving to Streator, IL. His music degree reflects his deep passion for music. He was an accomplished jazz and classical trombonist throughout his life, as well as a music instructor. He also deeply enjoyed opera.
Emerson earned his Master’s degree from the University of Illinois enhancing a career initially organizing and leading an elementary education music program, and later to an administrative leadership role held until his retirement in 1985. He was a member and past President of the Illinois Principals Assoc. and held memberships in the LaSalle County Teachers Assoc. and Illinois Retired Teachers Assoc.
After retirement, he generously volunteered his time in numerous ways and also enjoyed time with family and friends in San Diego, CA, as well as with family and grandchildren in Naples, FL. In 1996, he and Marge moved to East Lansing, MI to be close to family. A man of deep faith, he was a member and Elder of Ascension Lutheran Church. He was also an active member of both the East Lansing Kiwanis Club and the University Club of East Lansing enjoying both golf and bridge with friends.
Throughout his life and with a penchant for detail, Emerson personally and effectively managed his business affairs right up until his passing.
A true gentleman and beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Emerson is survived by his two daughters Diane (Joseph) Yarbrough of East Lansing and Rhonda (Jeffrey) Benson of Dublin, OH. He is also survived by two grandsons, Stephen Yarbrough of Tennessee and Joseph Yarbrough III (Catherine) of Virginia, and his four adored great-grandchildren Isabella, Gabrielle, Edward, and Annabelle.
A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined with private interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Those desiring may make contributions to Ascension Lutheran Church (Haslett, MI) or another charity of choice.
