Jeanne Schaberg passed away on Friday, April 22, 2022 in the arms of her loving husband and best friend. She was born in Dearborn, MI on May 24, 1953 to parents Fred and Helen Copple. She earned a BA from Michigan State University’s James Madison College and two master’s degrees from MSU, making her an ardent, lifelong Spartan. Her many interests and energies were reflected in an eclectic career track, capstoned as a well-respected social worker for the State of Michigan who simultaneously taught popular fitness classes. Jeanne travelled nation-wide as a trainer for ATT and she trained social workers across the state. Whether in the work force or in the gym, she loved sharing her knowledge and teaching others.
Jeanne was a second mother to several nieces, nephews and friends, and generously supported all with her time, energy, finances and formidable advocacy. She was known as a “Mama Bear,” who took in those in need as her own, and fiercely protected her cubs with love, kindness, guidance and an occasional course correction. She was a problem solver and held the attitude that no problem was ever too big to solve.
Jeanne attended St. John Catholic Church and Student Center as a college student, and never left. She was a long time, devoted member of the St. John’s choir, a lover of art and nature, a party planner extraordinaire, and an animal “whisperer”. From an early age, Jeanne had one or two of her beloved golden retrievers or springer spaniels always at her side. She considered Harbor Springs and Captiva Island as her treasured homes-away-from-home.
As the youngest of seven children, Jeanne learned how to put others first, to be family and faith oriented, and to be feisty and tough when needed, particularly against such opponents as cancer. She will be warmly remembered as someone who was petite in physique, but huge in indomitable spirit.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Fred and Jimmy Copple. She is survived by her loving husband Curt Schaberg, siblings Mary Jane, Warren (Gail), Juanita and Phyllis, “bonus kids” Stephen and Kelsey Schaberg and Julia and Anna Copple, several sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and special friends Brigit Martell, Liz Bosanic and Holly Noe.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. John Catholic Church, 327 MAC Ave, EL, MI on May 24, 2022 at 11:00am, with visitation preceding from 10:00-11:00am
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society (LTBHS.com) or to St. John Catholic Church.
