Mattie (Chaplin) Hampton, 88, of East Hartford, CT, passed on to be with her Heavenly Father on January 24, 2016. She was born on July 5, 1927, in Newberry, SC, to the late Calvin and Estelle (Alston) Chaplin.
She graduated from South Carolina State College with the honor of Valedictorian and later taught in the education system.
She married Roosevelt Hampton and moved to East Hartford, Connecticut where she worked for many years at Sage Allen in downtown Hartford. She was a loving and devoted mother, wife and homemaker.
She loved The Lord and praised Him daily. Her commitment to her faith and love for her Savior reigned prominent in her life. She had been a long time member of Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church for 60 years, where she graciously served on the Beyond the Wall Ministry, Life Members Ministry. She started an Outreach Program called Sharing Partners designed to aid and assist members in the community with much needed clothing options. Later she was asked to become Local Secretary for the Bureau of Supply Overseas Ministry.
She is survived by her wonderful husband of 62 years, Roosevelt Hampton, son and daughter in law Kenneth and Brenda (Nurse) Hampton of Berlin, and daughters Phyllis and Christina Hampton both of East Hartford, CT, three siblings; Carrie (Chaplin) Garrett, Brooklyn, NY, brother and spouse Roland Chaplin and Ojetta Chaplin, Dover, Delaware, brother Silas Chaplin, Dover, Delaware, five nieces and nephews; Luther Williams II, Calvin Williams, Jacqueline Garrett, Harvey Lee Garrett, Jr., Veronica Garrett and Nancy Raye her beloved cousin and friend. She is predeceased by her brother Albert Chaplin and sister Azilee (Chaplin) Williams, and a host of great - nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

The family would like to thank the Hebrew Home and its staff at hospice care as well as the staff at Hartford Hospital. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to those who took the time to visit, call, and pray for Mattie through her time of illness.
Friends and family are welcome to gather on Saturday, January 30, 2016 from 10AM to 11AM, at the Metropolitan A.M.E Zion Church, 2051 Main St. Hartford, for a period of visitation followed by a Funeral Service at 11AM, at the church. Burial will be held in Silver Lane Cemetery at a later date.
