Mary (Cunha) Simoes, 96, of East Hartford, loving wife of the late James M. Simoes, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. Born in Fall River, MA on February 25, 1925, a daughter of the late Louis and Mary (Isadore) Cunha, she had been a resident of East Hartford for over 60 years. Prior to her retirement, she was employed for many years by Union Carbide in East Hartford. A devout Catholic, Mary was a faithful communicant of St. Isaac Jogues Church, East Hartford and more recently St. Mary’s Church, East Hartford. Mary was a weekly volunteer in the kitchen on Thursday at bingo at St. Isaac Jogues and was a member of the Tekakwitha Ladies Guild at the church. She enjoyed playing bingo, playing slot machines at area casinos, sewing, and was an avid fan of the UConn Women’s basketball team. She also was a member of the Luna Club in East Hartford, but most of all she was a devoted and proud wife, mother and grandmother who cherished every moment with her entire family.
Mary is survived by her two sons, Timothy J. Simoes and his wife Joan of Somers, David L. Simoes and his wife Margie of Glastonbury; her four special grandchildren, Courtney Leone and her husband Paul of Southington, Allison Simoes of Glastonbury, Taylor Simoes of Glastonbury, William Simoes of Salt Lake City, Utah; two adored great-grandchildren, Ryli Simoes of Glastonbury and Mason Leone of Southington. She also leaves two brothers, Louis Cunha and Gilbert Cunha both of Fall River, MA; a sister-in-law, Mary Cunha of Westport, MA; several nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Besides her beloved husband and parents, Mary was predeceased by an infant son; a daughter, Debbie Simoes of East Hartford; and two brothers, Edward Cunha and Alfred Cunha both of Fall River, MA.
Funeral service will be Saturday (October 16, 2021) at 9 am from the D’Esopo-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 am at St. Mary’s Church of North American Martyrs Parish, corner of Main Street and Maplewood Avenue, East Hartford. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, East Hartford. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home chapel on Friday (October 15, 2021) from 4 - 6 pm.
