Joan Frances (Kelliher) Newman of East Hartford, loving wife of 50 years to the late John R. Newman passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 26, 2022 in Cohasset, MA after celebrating a beautiful Christmas with loved ones. Born in Hartford on February 27, 1939, the daughter of the late Timothy F. and Mary (Foley) Kelliher, she resided in East Hartford for the past 59 years. Joan was a graduate of Our Lady of Sorrows School in Hartford, Hartford Public High School class of 1957, and the St. Frances Hospital School of Nursing class of 1960. Prior to her retirement, Joan was employed by St. Mary Home, West Hartford where she was the nursing director for its Memory Care day program. A devout Catholic, Joan was a faithful daily communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church, East Hartford. Spending time with friends and family, especially her two granddaughters, was her greatest joy, along with being a loving and caring friend to all who knew her.
Joan is survived by two daughters. Nancy R. Newman of East Hartford, Eileen E. Newman of Boston, MA; a son, Dennis P. Newman and his wife, Whitney, and her beloved granddaughters Rorie A. Newman and Kylie J. Newman all of Cohasset, MA. She also leaves a sister, Maureen A. (Kelliher) Steck, and a brother Timothy F. Kelliher, Jr. both of Newington; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral service will be Tuesday (January 3, 2023) with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 am at Our Lady of Peace Church of St. Edmund Campion Parish, 370 May Road, East Hartford. Burial will follow at West Meadow Cemetery, 679 Willard Avenue, Newington. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church on Tuesday morning. Joan’s family will receive relatives and friends on Monday (January 2, 2023) from 3 – 6 pm at the D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford.
