Jean Marie (Galovich) Grilli, 78, of Ellington, loving wife of over 55 years of Gary L. Grilli, DDS, peacefully went to be in the arms of our Lord on Saturday, April 20, 2024 with her caring family by her side. Born in Hartford on June 12, 1945, daughter of the late Frank and Frances (Golas) Galovich, she grew up in East Hartford where she attended school, graduating from East Hartford High School in 1963. She was also a graduate of St. Joseph College in West Hartford, class of 1967 where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. While at St. Joseph’s, Jean was elected to “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities”. Jean started her teaching career with the town of East Hartford at Robert J. O’Brien Elementary School. She then taught at the Wyncote Elementary School, just outside Philadelphia, PA.
Jean and her husband moved back to South Windsor where they raised their four special children and resided in town for 35 years prior to moving to Ellington over 20 years ago. A devout catholic, Jean was a longtime faithful communicant of St. Margaret Mary Church in South Windsor. A talented piano player, she played the piano daily until her illness prevented her from playing. She was an avid reader and loved solving all kinds of different puzzles and word games. As a matter of fact, there wasn’t a puzzle or word game that she could not solve. Jean was also an exceptional cook and fantastic baker, especially her homemade pies. She knew everyone’s favorite pie and would make them for the holidays and special occasions.
A lover of the beach, Jean truly enjoyed her cottage at Westbrook and entertaining family and friends. She was such a strong supporter of her children and grandchildren, always being at their sporting events and school functions. She never missed one dance recital and always had a smile on her face as a proud mother and grandmother. Most of all, Jean was a soft, gentle woman, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who was “the example for the family” as she was always the voice of reason with her soft demeanor. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her beloved husband Gary, Jean is survived by her four beautiful children, Carri Clark and her husband Dean of Ellington, Gary Grilli, DMD and his wife Nicole of South Windsor, Thomas Grilli and his wife Dana of South Windsor, Jennifer Getek and her husband Nicholas of East Hartford; and her nine adored grandchildren, Nicholas, Alexis, and Ryan Cantin, Nathan, Justin, and Grace Grilli, Thomas, Callie, and Louis “LJ” Grilli. She also leaves her sister, Sandra Marques and her husband Richard of East Hartford; special cousins, Fran and Carol Perrone, Bob and Pat Perrone; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends. Besides her parents, Jean was predeceased by her brother, Ken Galovich of North Carolina, and her sister, Lois May of South Carolina.
Funeral service will be Friday (April 26th) with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30 am at St. Margaret Mary Church of St. Junipero Serra Parish, 80 Hayes Road, South Windsor. Entombment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum, Burnside Avenue, East Hartford. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church on Friday morning. Jean’s family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday (April 25th) from 4 – 7 pm at the D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jean’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
