Veterinarian, Sportsman and Christian Leader Born April 8, 1937, to parents George "Ward" Dedrick and Emily Schwartz Dedrick of Delevan, NY, Dr. Dedrick was valedictorian and Class President of the Class of 1955 @Delevan-MachiasCentral H.S. As a youth, Douglas Dedrick was very active in the 4-H and FFA organizations showing and judging dairy cattle at county and state fairs where he was Cattaraugus Co. 4-H Grand Champion showman in 1952 and #1 FFA dairy judge@NYS Fair in 1954. He graduated from the NYS College of Veterinary Medicine in 1961 and first practiced in North Dartmouth, Mass before serving as a Captain in the US Air Force, VC from 1962-64.Dr. Dedrick owned and operated the Hinkley Veterinary Hospital, Inc (Now Buffalo S.A.Hosp) from 1967-79 during which he founded and served as President of the Greater Buffalo Veterinary Emergency Services, President of the Buftalo Academy of Veterinary Medicine, President of the WNYVMA and Director of the Niagara Frontier VMA. Dr. Dedrick, thereafter, owned and operated the East Aurora Veterinary Hospital from 1980-1993 during which time he was a Director of the Eastern States VMA (NAVC) in Orlando, Fl. and became an Honorary member of the American Veterinary Medical Assoc. Dr. Dedrick was a varsity player on both the Bi1-County Championship basketball and baseball teams at DMCS, an All- Star baseball player for Delevan in the Suburban Buffalo News league, played on the Cornell University baseball team, semi-pro baseball in Dartmouth, Mass and on the Kingsley Field, Ore. AF team. Dedrick snow ski medaled several times including a gold @ Steamboat Springs, Colorado as a NASTAR downhill slalom ski racer and was a 50 plus year active member of the International Lederhosen Ski Club, an avid tennis player winning trophies including East Aurora men's Senior doubles championship, and was an ardent Buffalo Bills fan attending two Super Bowls. Dedrick was twice President of the East Aurora Lion's Club. In retirement, Dr. Dedrick operated a private, mobile veterinary spay/neuter clinic traveling for 5 yrs throughout five WNY counties neutering, spaying& vaccinating over 12,000 cats and dogs for low-income families and feral cats, to help reduce the pet overpopulation problem. Dr. Dedrick completed a Master of Arts degree in Pastoral Ministry at Christ the King Seminary in '07, serving as Assistant Pastor in 2007-08 and volunteering at the Baker Memorial United Methodist Church since 1980 plus during his retirement winters at The Villages, FL, New Covenant UMC. Dr. Dedrick traveled extensively throughout the six continents and all US National Parks with other veterinarians and friends, Dedrick is survived by a daughter Mary Lisa (Brent)Charles, Washington, DC, son Ronald (Kristel) East Aurora, 5 grandchildren , step daughter Jennie Karaszeski (Matt), a brother Duane (late Joyce) Delevan, a sister Donna (Norman) Kopeck of Wilson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dwight, a helicopter pilot killed in Viet Nam in 1968 and Dalton Corky" Noralyn). A 11:00 AM memorial service will be held at Baker UM Church on Saturday at 11AM. Internment and military service will follow at 2:30 PM Delevan cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined.
