Kenneth Whitney Dalzell, Jr., 96, died Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida after a brief illness. Born in Maplewood, New Jersey on October 31, 1915 to Kenneth Whitney Dalzell and Mabelle Ruth Haynes Dalzell, he was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Frances Grosvenor Ill Dalzell in 1999.
Mr. Dalzell is survived by three children, Eleanor McMurtrey of Houston, Texas, Sanda Ursone and her husband, John, of Winsted, Connecticut and Robert (Grovie) Dalzell of Largo, Florida. He leaves four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by one great-grandchild.
A graduate of Princeton University in 1939 and the Princeton Graduate School of Architecture in 1940, Mr. Dalzell designed many schools and public buildings in the Clearwater area, the Clearwater City Hall and Clearwater campus of St. Petersburg Jr. College being of special note.
He was a director of the original Bank of Indian Rocks and a Commissioner for the town of Belleair as well as Commissioner for the Pinellas County Housing Authority. Mr. and Mrs. Dalzell were involved with and supporters of the Upper Pinellas Association of Retarded Citizens since its founding in 1958 and he was awarded UPARC’s “Man of the Year” in 1971. He was a veteran of World War II having served as an aerial reconnaissance interpreter for the U.S. Army.
Mr. Dalzell was an avid golfer and member of the Belleair Country Club for many years. He shot his age well into his 80’s, and is credited with five holes-in-one. He also was an accomplished sailor and was a member of both the Mantoloking and Bay Head Yacht Clubs in Mantoloking and Bay Head, New Jersey from childhood.
Burial will take place on December 5, 2011, 11:00 a.m. at Sylvan Abbey Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to UPARC Foundation, 1501 N. Belcher Rd. #249, Clearwater, FL 33765-1300.
