DiPietro, John, 88 died February 12, 2011. Born Giovanni DiPietro, September 14th, 1922 in Youngstown, Ohio to Thomas and Aurelia DiPietro. The family moved to Dearborn, Michigan in 1936. He attended Fordson High School.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corp on September 23, 1942, participated in the invasion of Guam and Iwo Jima, was wounded in action July 26, 1944 in Guam - received the Purple Heart. He was then wounded again in action on February 25, 1945 in Iwo Jima and received the Gold Star in lieu of the second Purple Heart. John was attached to the 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Tank Battalion for three years. He was assigned to the South Pacific area from July 16, 1943 through June 7, 1945. He held the rank of sergeant with an Honorable Discharge on November 27, 1945.
John married Georgia Vetturini on February 23, 1946 and had five children: Robert who passed away in Vietnam at the age of 24, Greg - North Carolina, Diane - Clearwater, Don - Michigan and John - Alabama. He has been blessed with 6 wonderful grandchildren, Dawn Straus, David Rode, Gregory, Donald, Robert and John Paul DiPietro. He also has a great-granddaughter Sullivan Rose Straus.
John worked for Ford Motor Company from August, 1942, retired in January, 1979. His last position was as Safety Engineer at the Woodhaven Stamping Plant in Michigan.
He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the New Port Richey Stamp Club since 1982 and a member of the American Philatelic Society.
Once retired, John and his wife moved to Bayonet Point, Florida in 1979, later to Oldsmar in 1999, and finally lived out his last two years in Clearwater, Florida with his daughter Diane.
John is predeceased by his parents, his loving and devoted wife, Georgia, his brother Tom, son Robert and son-in-law, Rod.
He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Our hearts are saddened with his passing but know he is in a much better place now. He put up a fight like no other could with the disease bestowed upon him in 2007. We will never ever forget this amazing father, grandfather and friend.
